What to get the graduate

May 27th, 2009 at 6:47 am by Cheryl Tan under Personalities, Traffic

It’s a big gift-buying season.  After all, you may know someone who has worked so hard for that diploma.  While you may not be able to give that new grad a job, you can get something he or she can use.

We chatted with Ruby Weber, owner of Please and Thank You in Virgini Beach for some ideas on our sister station Fox 43 for the News at 7.

Brownie Troop 15 at WAVY TV 10

We recently had some special visitors to the WAVY-TV 10 and Fox 43 TV studio. Brownie Troop 15 stopped by for a tour. The girls had some great questions about our news operation, particularly related to our news gathering.

The highlight had to be the studio, though! They got the chance to sit on the anchor desk and get in front of our “green” screen where our meteorologists stand in front of changing weather maps. We had a great time. Thanks for stopping by!

Putt for Smiles golf tournament

May 6th, 2009 at 5:06 am by Cheryl Tan under Personalities, Traffic

I had the chance to head to Ocean View Golf Course to watch golfers in action for a good cause on Friday.  What a way to head into the weekend!  The Young Filipino-American Professionals of Hampton Roads hosted its first fundraiser of this kind for Operation Smile, which is based in Norfolk.  In an uncertain time, it’s nice to know there’s something we can do to literally put a smile on a child’s face.  Money raised from this event will help thousands of kids born with a cleft lip or a cleft palate.

Groovy grub

May 1st, 2009 at 10:04 am by Cheryl Tan under Personalities, Traffic

We heard some great secrets from a chef in Ocean View in Norfolk this week that would be a valuable addition to your recipe box.  Captain Groovy’s is fairly new, about a year old, but already a hit with restaurant-goers in East Beach.

Chef and owner David Watts was kind enough to make one of his most popular dishes.  His famous fish tacos.  He only serves them on Wednesdays, so on the other nights of the week, you’ll have to make them yourself.  Here’s how he does it.

Get organized!

April 30th, 2009 at 8:22 am by Cheryl Tan under Personalities, Traffic

You know you do it. Open the mailbox, take out the bills, catalogs, and papers, then dump them all on a table. Over the course of the week, that pile grows and grows. Well, that’s what happens in my house!

Our organizing expert, Amy Volk of Simplified Living in Virginia Beach, teaches us how to sort through the paper clutter. Here are her tips. And you can catch Amy twice a month on Fox 43 News at 7.

Nope. Not Friday yet.

But, there’s definitely something to look forward to when the day does finally roll around. On Fox 43 News at 7, we’ve had some great times, welcoming musical guests from around Hampton Roads. Over the last few Friday mornings, we’ve been treated to performances by the Hunt Family Fiddlers, Julie Clark, The Michael Clark Band, and Narissa Bond, just to name a few.

Here I am with The Mike Aiken Band

Thinking spring

April 28th, 2009 at 10:53 am by Cheryl Tan under Personalities, Traffic

On Fox 43 News at 7 this morning, we had a really fun segment to welcome spring.  Patrice Dupuis from Bloom in Norfolk stopped by to share her knowledge about flower arranging.  And boy, did the studio smell GREAT!  Kerri and I had a great time learning how to put together beautiful blooms to display in centerpieces in our homes.  Check out the video!

We’re officially tweeting on the morning show.  In between the hours of 5 and 7 a.m. during the week, we’ll be sending out tweets on traffic and breaking news.  It’s really a great way to get the message out quickly and succinctly.  Check us out at www.twitter.com/wavy_news

Some good traffic news

March 23rd, 2009 at 6:40 am by Cheryl Tan under Traffic

Can you believe it?  Yes, there’s some good traffic news to pass along for commuters in Norfolk.

For those who travel Hampton Boulevard, new traffic signal timing plans have been developed for the Hampton Boulevard corridor between the Midtown Tunnel and Admiral Taussig Boulevard, including the signals on Terminal Boulevard and Admiral Taussig Boulevard.  The proposed traffic signal timings will take effect on March 24 and are projected to decrease the amount of delay a driver experiences along Hampton Boulevard.

And, better news for those in downtown Norfolk who are feeling the light rail pain.  Bank Street at Freemason Street will reopen to traffic on Monday, March 23.

Foggy Wednesday

March 18th, 2009 at 7:25 am by Cheryl Tan under Traffic

Foggy weather today could have really slowed you down.

I know I took my time making it into work this morning.  I left my neighborhood in Virginia Beach around 3:30 a.m. and hit a wall of dense of fog.  I know you did, too.

This type of heavy fog doesn’t happen very often in Hampton Roads, so we may not be as familiar with driving in it.

So, here are some tips:

Slow down!  You probably don’t want to go as slow as I did this morning, but, take it easy!  You’ll have to at the tunnels.  Caution lights are up at all of them.  The Monitor Merrimac and Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel are running at 45 miles per hour.  The Downtown and Midtown tunnels, 25 mph.

Use those low beam lights, even during the daylight hours, while the fog is with us.  You may think high beams might help you see better.  Nope.  They will make it worse.

Stay alert!  You should be doing this anyway, but, it becomes more critical on days like today when visibility is an issue.  Chain reaction crashes are more likely when you can’t see in front of you!

Be careful.  Jon is promising sun after the fog burns off.  Enjoy–a little later!  :)
