Blackwater River Flood UpdateMay 2nd, 2014 at 5:36 pm by Jeff Edmondson WAVY under Weather
The Blackwater River just to the north of Franklin is approaching its crest this evening. The latest measurement I have seen was at 11.09ft (taken at 5:30pm) The river will crest at 11.3ft this evening which is above flood stage of 10.8ft.
THE FLOOD WARNING CONTINUES FOR THE BLACKWATER RIVER ABOVE FRANKLIN * UNTIL SATURDAY EVENING...OR UNTIL THE WARNING IS CANCELLED. * AT 02:45 PM FRIDAY THE STAGE WAS 11.0 FEET * MINOR FLOODING IS OCCURRING. * FLOOD STAGE IS 10.8 FEET * FORECAST...THE RIVER WILL CONTINUE RISING TO NEAR 11.3 FEET BY THIS EVENING. THE RIVER WILL FALL BELOW FLOOD STAGE TOMORROW AFTERNOON. * AT 11.8 FEET...A PORTION OF ROUTE 611 IN SOUTH HAMPTON COUNTY... JOYNERS BRIDGE ROAD...IS INNUNDATED. A PORTION OF ROUTE 619...IN ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY...IS FLOODED. THIS RIVER LEVEL IS COMPARABLE TO A PREVIOUS CREST OF 11.4 FEET ON APR 25 2008.
Remember, if you see a flooded roadway, turn around and don’t drown. A foot of moving water can move a car off of a roadway which could create a dangerous situation. The river will decrease in height late tonight and tomorrow.
