Winter Has Returned For A Day Plus Storm Recap

April 16th, 2014 at 9:24 am by under Weather

Wow! Feels more like winter outside this morning. It was cold enough for me to need to turn on the heat in my car on my ride into work. Check out the low temperatures across the region this morning. The record low in Norfolk is 33° set back in 1943. We didn’t break the record, but we were close. Wind chill values were in the 20s!

All of this cold air rushed in behind a powerful cold front that moved through Hampton Roads last night. Once the front moved in, wind speeds picked up and temperatures dropped a good 20-30 degrees in less than an hour. Check out these peak wind gusts recorded last night.

Wind speeds along the Lower Chesapeake Bay ranged from 60-70mph. The strong winds pushed a large ship aground near Shore Drive in Virginia Beach. Read the full story here on wavy.com. Wind damage was also reported in a Virginia Beach neighborhood. A tree fell onto a fence and two cars. Rain totals were also quite impressive. Most locations saw between 1.5-2 inches of rain with some areas seeing more than that. Now we are above average for the month of April and for the year so far.

The wind is going to stay up all day long. Future Trak has our sustained wind speeds ranging from 10-20mph with gusts up to 35mph this afternoon.

The pollen count will be on the rise today, thanks to the wind. I have the pollen forecast at a medium level today. Hopefully you enjoyed some allergy relief yesterday. Even though we will see plenty of sunshine this afternoon, highs will only reach the upper 40s. Some 50° readings will be possible for inland locations. We will see a gradual warm-up over the next few days. Highs in the 50s Thursday and Friday with 60s in the forecast this weekend.

Many have placed potted plants in their garages or covered their young vegetation due to the near freezing temps at night. When will it be safe to stop taking such precautions?

    Thank you,
