Thou Art Mixed!February 26th, 2014 at 9:12 am by Jeremy Wheeler under Weather
Hark! A Wintery Mix of snoweth, raineth, and sleeteth is upon us. Ok I’m being a bit silly and dramatic, but yes…there is a scattered wintry mix out there this morning. It hasn’t been much, and it isn’t expected to be much today. Here was the view around 7am on Super Doppler 10.
We had numerous reports of light snow mixed in with sleet and some rain. Temperatures were in the mid-upper 30s over most of the area. There were a few low 30s in spots.
With the air temperatures above freezing and the ground temperatures close to 40 degrees I still don’t expect any accumulations. We may see some on a few grassy spots or decks, but otherwise it will all melt. Our Future Trak model did a pretty good job with this morning’s precipitation. Here is what it shows for the noon hour:
The precipitation is caused by some fast moving energy in the mid levels of the atmosphere (jetstreak). Also, there has been an increase in moisture in the region. Finally, there is a weak area of low pressure forming offshore to our southeast. This has helped to drop our pressure a bit. Winds were light this morning, but they will pick up out of the north by the midday hours. They will run at about 10-15mph. We are forecast to dry out by the late afternoon. That’s when temperatures will pop up to near 40 degrees.
Tonight we’ll see even more clearing. Winds will stay out of the north at 10-15mph. So our temperatures will drop down to the low/mid 20s. Wind chills will be in the teens. Brrr. That’s about as cold as it was about 2 weeks ago. So be prepared. If you have some plants that are budding or coming up, then you may want to cover them with some mulch or leaves. It will be very cold at the bus stops tomorrow morning. Luckily we’ll see a lot of sunshine tomorrow. Winds will be west at 10-15mph. That’s typically a warming wind. So highs will get back to the upper 40s to near 50. Another round of cold weather will move in for Friday. In fact our high temperatures are now aiming for the low/mid 30s. That’s it! Saturday is looking at mid 40s with a few rain showers, but not a wash-out. Sunday looks good at this time. We’ll are calling for highs in the mid 50s and partly cloudy skies. We could hit 60 on Monday, but there is a high chance for rain. So that may keep us in the 50s. Stay tuned for updates on that, as we could see some heavy rain.
