This weekend in Hampton Roads

It’s a big weekend packed with fun and festivals! The annual Hampton Bay Days are in full swing this weekend, plus concerts and animal encounters… Take a look at what’s going on:

Traffic Notes:

-Laskin Rood, Holly Road, and Baltick Avenue are set to reopen at 2 p.m. as part of the fourth and final phase of the Laskin Gateway project.

-The westbound lanes of the Downtown Tunnel are closed again this weekend. The closure begins Friday at 8 p.m. and lasts through 5 a.m. Monday. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes, and the eastbound tunnel will remain open.

-Road work begins Sunday on Princess Anne Road from South Plaza Trail to Edwin Drive. Milling, paving, and pavement marking work is schedule to be underway through Sept. 29, and is expected to produce traffic delays and congestion. Warning signs will be posted for lane closures. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes, when possible.

Friday, Sept. 6:

-HAMPTON: The annual Hampton Bay Days returns this weekend, highlighting the importance of the Chesapeake Bay. The outdoor festival is free, featuring musical entertainment, vendors, and food. And don’t forget – the Hampton History Museum is free to visitors during Bay Days weekend!

-NORFOLK: It’s ladies night at TowneBanke Fountain Park. Bubbles & Bluejeans runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with music and fashion.

-NORFOLK: Head to the Virginia Zoo for “Zoovies,” and catch a movie at the zoo! “A Bug’s Life” is showing from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

-NORFOLK: “9 to 5: The Musical” opens Friday at the Little Theater of Norfolk, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton. Tickets are $17 for adults, $14 for students.

Comedian

Saturday, Sept. 7:

-HAMPTON: The annual Hampton Bay Days returns this weekend, highlighting the importance of the Chesapeake Bay. The outdoor festival is free, featuring musical entertainment, vendors, and food. Fireworks are planned for Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. And don’t forget – the Hampton History Museum is free to visitors during Bay Days weekend!

-NEWPORT NEWS: It’s free admission weekend at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News. Visitors will be able to get in for free from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 7 and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 8.

-NORFOLK: The Tidewater Tuners Exhibition opens Saturday evening at the d’Art Center. Tidewater Tuners is a non-profit organization made up of local wood-turners.

-NORFOLK: Town Point Park plays host to the Virginia Opera for the 5th annual Opera in the Park. The event is free and begins at 7:30 p.m.

-VIRGINIA BEACH: Neptune’s Surfing Classic starts at 7:30 a.m. between 1st and 8th streets at the Oceanfront. The event runs both Saturday and Sunday until 5 p.m.

-VIRGINIA BEACH: Neptune’s Fall Wine Festival features several wineries, plus food and live entertainment at Neptune’s Park. For Saturday and Sunday, the hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Only a limited number of tickets are available for the event, and each ticket includes a commemorative wine glass and tastings.

-NEWPORT NEWS: ZZ Top will be at the Ferguson Center for the Arts at 7 p.m. with special guest Seth Stainback & Roosterfoot. The band is originally from Houston, Texas, and you may know them for their songs “Sharp Dressed Man,” “La Grange,” and “Legs.” Tickets start at $79.
