It Just Keeps Getting Better

It’s only my third week as a WAVY/FOX43 intern, and my experiences just keep getting better and better. I’ve been having so much fun working in the promotions department! Although I was sad to leave sales, I’m already enjoying the many different jobs and aspects of promotions! One of my favorite parts about the department is getting to work promotional events. This past saturday, I was able to work the Boardwalk Arts Festival with Sammy. We set up a booth for the Hampton Roads Show and handed out promotional items throughout the day. Our booth was right in front of a stage where different groups performed throughout the morning, so we had an awesome view! Chris and Ariane emceed the event and signed autographs throughout the morning, as well. It was really neat to interact with fans and hear how much they enjoy watching the show. I had so much fun working this event, and being at the beach was an additional bonus for this midwestern girl!

Tuesday was my first day actually working in the promotions office. I was able to watch how a commerical is edited on Avid NewsCutter and Adobe After Effects. I have previous experience using Avid, so I really understood that part. The After Effects, however, threw me for a loop. I hope to keep sitting in on different projects to really get a feel for how the program works. Understanding how to edit is an important skill in the television industry. I think knowing how to use different programs will really benefit me with future careers, so I hope to keep learning. I also learned how to calcuate the value of a commercial and spent my day working on several different reports for the community affairs coordinator, Tony Williams. While calculating the value, I had to be very accurate when figuring out how many commericals aired at particular times, while also paying attention to the total run time of the ads. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this kind of work.

Wednesday was an absolute blast for me! The top 20 finalists for the Face of Fox contest came into the station to shoot promotional photos and videos. I got to help with the photoshoot and had so much fun! I must say, the contestants all have flamboyant personalities. They were a wild and fun group to work with! It was really awesome to see how the pictures were taken, and how they ended up turning out. I got to sit down with the photographer, Rob Coble, and help choose the best pictures of each contestant. I was also able to see the different techniques used for editing a photo on photoshop . The pictures all turned out great, and I’m excited to see what contestants make the top five!

Tomorrow I am giving a tour of the station and I’m really excited. It is always fun to see how excited people get to see the newsroom and studios. Seeing other people get excited about WAVY/FOX43 only reminds me of how awesome this industry is, and how lucky I am to have this opportunity.
