LMF: It’s Only Rock & Roll…April 3rd, 2013 at 11:58 am by Kyle Bloom under THRS Live Music
…but I like it. That’s my little ode to the Stones, who announced their 50 and counting tour (The nearest show will be in Philly June 18). Now onto the local love. Tomorrow kicks off the first of three battles for the spot to open up FM99′s Lunatic Luau Friday, May 3 at Farm Bureau Live. 9 great local rock bands will be split into groups of 3 and rock to the fullest at Smoked Out in Virginia Beach. Tomorrow night will feature Category V, Ghost Of April and MINDVENT. Next Thursday, A New Day Rising, Nitro Fish and Revery will battle it out and the final three, Hobgoblin, Seven Ten Oil and JACT, will rock out Thursday, April 18. A winner will be chosen each night and the final three will perform Thursday, April 25 and the winner among those three will open up the Luau. So get out there and support your favorite band. Now for my little editorial side note: Why does there have to be a ‘battle’ for local bands to win a slot in a music festival put on by a local radio station. The rock scene in this area is growing at record pace with great original talent and what better way to showcase that then by having their own stage at the Luau. Evidence from last year’s Luau clearly shows that the audience embraces the local talent as shown in this picture from Revery’s set.Who knows? Maybe a locals only rock festival will happen in the near future but in the meantime, get out there and support your local music.
Tonight is the first Local Original Music Party. A new monthly showcase, LOMP will feature local music, arts and brew at the Granby Theater and it offers a great party atmosphere to showcase our local talent. Tonight, our friends The Dahus and Bear Crossing along with Bad Volcano will supply the tunes and Young Veterans Brewing Company will supply the brew. Everything kicks off at 8p and it’s all just $20.
A big congrats goes out to the 10 finalists in the Sea Level Singer/Songwriter Festival’s Emerging Artist Contest. The finalist are Justin Clements, Dustin Furlow, Luke Hartman, Sophie Harton, John Kovacevich, Stephan Lazar, Roy Moats, Will Overman, Dan Pellegrino and Jared Swift. The 10 will perform this Saturday at the Attucks Theater and the winner will receive a slew of prizes including an appearance on The Hampton Roads Show as our Live Music Friday featured artist April 12. The showcase is $10 at the door and will also feature last year’s winner, Nate Sacks. I’ll feature more on the Sea Level Festival in tomorrow’s blog.
That’s all for me today. Get out there and SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL MUSIC
