Chilly Rain…Bummer!January 2nd, 2013 at 8:47 am by Jeremy Wheeler under Weather
I say…if it’s going to be cold and wet, then it may as well snow a little bit. I know that there is a mix of snow-lovers and snow-haters here in the region, but most would agree that a wet 38 degrees is not nice weather. We did have rain showers with a few sleet pellets this morning. I didn’t have any reports of snowflakes though.
Drier weather and higher pressure will build in through the afternoon. So we will have some clearing, but northerly winds of 10-15mph with keep high temps from rising above the low 40s. By tonight skies will be mostly clear to partly cloudy and the winds will drop off. So low temperatures will be in the upper 20s to low 30s. We’ll see a mix of sun and clouds tomorrow with highs only in the low 40s. We are expecting dry conditions through the weekend despite a couple of weak upper level disturbances moving through between now and then.
I mentioned on Monday that I had a couple of photos from my trip to Illinois. So I finally got them to work. The first is some of the snow that we encountered in Washington Pennsylvania on the way back. It was a very pretty view from our hotel room. That was a pleasant treat during the holidays, but it wasn’t fun to drive through.
We hit heavy snow over the mountains going up and coming back, but there wasn’t too much snow in Illinois. While my wife was driving I took a picture of something that is becoming more familiar across the U.S. A wind farm. Up in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio there are wind farms springing up all over the place just like this one:
It is really cool to see the giant fan blades spinning in the middle of corn fields. I hope to see some of this in Virginia in the near future as it is a great way to tap into a clean fuel source.
