Severe Weather Possible TonightDecember 26th, 2012 at 9:54 am by Jeff Edmondson WAVY under Weather
We have a unusual setup in the atmosphere right now, and that is giving us a chance for severe weather tonight including tornadoes. Think of today, like a day in the summer, when we have severe weather in the evening, except it is only going to be in the 60s.
The Storm Prediction Center has included some of us in a Slight Risk for storms. There is also a Tornado Watch for Dare Co. until 5pm.
We could see some hail from the storms today, but the biggest threat will be for damaging wind gusts in excess of 60mph. Tornadoes will also be a possibility with the amount of shear or spin we have in the atmosphere.
This morning all we are seeing is rain/showers from the warm front.
Sometimes I hope that the Future Trak is incorrect, this is one of those cases. If we see this clearing around noon -3pm we could see some explosive storms develop in North Carolina this evening. All that sun is doing is creating warmer temperatures which is like adding fuel to a fire.
At 5pm the front will move in. Any storms that develop ahead of the line of storms, or ahead of that cold front will have a good chance to be severe if everything continues on the path to this point. (Assuming we get that sunshine and we still have lots of shear in the atmosphere.)
It is something we will watch all day. Keep and eye on Super Doppler 10 for any watches or warnings*.
I will have an afternoon update around 1pm right here in this blog.

At 11:30am The Storm Prediction center changed the outlook for today to just a slight risk for the Southside and NE N.C. The timing still looks to be about the same for many of us, after 2pm. There is still a threat for more tornadoes for the OBX as there is a good amount of shear available to make these storms rotate and spin.
