This past weekend was loaded with races, starting with the From Here to Eternity 5k through a Norfolk cemetery, Kyle Oakes, from Chesapeake, was the Overall Winner in 16:50. Virginia Beach’s Asia Sorenson led the Ladies in 21:09. For the Race at the Cape, Catherine Williams was the Women’s Champion in 19:31, while good friend, Jason Hann of Virginia Beach took the Overall title in 18:56.
Over at the MOCA, the Women on The Run was a parade of Blue as the Tidewater Strider Youth program, New Energy, dominated the 5k and mile races. While Allyson Garner was the First Female in the 5K at 22:15, 11 year old Ben Werve won the 5k race in 19:31 and the mile in a swift 5:35. Way to Go Ben!
Up in Williamsburg for the Crapolfest 5K Run, Todd Kessler, of Newport News won in 16:55, followed closely by the incredible Grand Master, 57 year young, Stephen Chantry in 17:07. Good friend of the Blog, Karen Terry, set the course record for the Ladies in 17:22. Newport News’ Mercedes Castillo-D’Amico continues to blow away her age group records, besting the 55-59 age group record by nearly two minutes, with an inspiring 19:21. Call me jealous.
All Eyes are On D.C.!
Forget the Presidential debate this week or even the Redskins with RG3 going to play the Steelers, the Nation’s Capitol hosts the 37th Annual Marine Corps Marathon. having run this the last two years, I can honestly say that this is a “Must Do” on your Marathon list. The historical sights of Washington are all around the course and the Marine support at each stop is amazing. For first timers, make sure you linger at the finish and get your picture taken at the monument. It is SOLD OUT and many of our”757″ Running Friends will “storm the district” this Sunday. While I won’t be there in attendance, my thoughts and best wishes to you all!
Here in Hampton Roads, J&A Racing has the “spooky” run of the week with the Wicked 10K, starting at 8am Saturday. Awards will be given for the regular accomplishments, but this also features a costume contest. There are some really creative people in Hampton Roads and this year. I anticipate seeing some good costumes.
Mettle Events FINALLY has the the tallest bridge ready and now you can run it this Saturday, maybe even do a double after the “Wicked” with the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge 5K run. I know Ann Hupp always puts on a challenging race. This run starts at 10am. How tall, you ask? 169 feet tall! The bridge itself is over a mile long. on a side note, there will be “No Toll” as you are running the bridge.
Up in Mathews County, the Bobby Stewart 8K & 5K will be racing away at 9:30am Saturday. A big “shout out” to my old friend, Curtis “Fleet” Walker, holding it down in Mathews. Good Luck to all!
Keeping in the Seasonal Spirit, The Port Norfolk Civic League is excited to present the first annual Port Norfolk BOO-yah! 5K and Little Monsters Fun Run on Sunday, October 28,The race benefits the Port Norfolk Parks Fund and The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Should be a fun time!
