The Latest Running News and Notes around Hampton Roads with Sportswrap Running Reporter, Jon “Flex” Leiding
Time Marches On!
Seems like the season is finally coming to a change. two weeks ago, we were talking about humidity during the Rock & Roll Half marathon and how many people needed attention due to overheating. recently, fall temperatures have started, allowing us to run a little harder. Checking the past events, it looks like that theory is true.
Quick times were in the mix at the Hampton Bay Days 8K run for Hampton’s Edward Rietscha, who posted a 28:34, while Christine Schaffner led the ladies in 38:46. On the Peninsula, the ECPI 8K held at Mariners’ Museum Park benefited the Wounded Warrior Project. Paul Chekal, 41 of Newport News was the overall winner, with a 29:47 (that’s 6:00 minute per mile). Yorktown’s Christal Witte, was the Ladies Champ, rocking the course in 31:41.
Congratulations to Some Speedsters!
Williamsburg’s Stephen Chantry, 57, Ladies Winner,Karen Terry, along with a few others set age group course records at the Salute to the Military “Red, White and Blue 5K”. Even 76 year old, John Essery, from Williamsburg got in the course record act with a swift 28:55. I am a big fan of the races and runners in the Colonial area. I don’t get there often but am always impressed when I do. Great Job!
My Triathlon friends were on top of their game this past Sunday at the Sandman Triathlon. Derek Russell was the Overall Champ, with a 1:12:40. On the Ladies side, Emily Eckman led the Ladies in 1:27:25 over the 750 meter Ocean Swim, 14 mile Bike Ride, then a 5K Run.
Time to “Toe The Line”
A classic Norfolk run and a New race highlight the weekend on the Southside. Friday, the Larchmont Elementary Rat Race includes a 5K and a Kids Mile that was literally “wall to wall” youngsters in the streets last year. Ann Hupp from Mettle Events always puts on a good show. Also, Staying close to Hampton Boulevard, the NEW Heart of Ghent 10K debuts with an historic run through the Ghent area. 2012 US Olympic Gold Medalist, Francena McCorory is due to make an appearance as well. Sounds like fun!
I always like giving events that promote our youth a little push. That said, Saturday also offers the all NEW Franklin Mustang Football 10K, 5K, and One Miler. My friends in Suffolk and Franklin can be racing to help out the youth football team.
If you really want some distance, head to Ft. Eustis for the Mulberry Island Half Marathon and 5K. I know the Colonial Road Runners and Peninsula Track Clubs will be well represented there and may have to choose as the Williamsburg Landing 5K for the Arc also takes off Saturday morning. Decisions, decisions…
My good friend of the Blog, Aric Marinez, reminded me that the Colonial 200 Relay is coming up soon, racing from Charlottesville to Williamsburg. Yes, two hundred miles covered by 12 Runners going through the night, finishing at Jamestown Beach Park in Williamsburg. Thanks for keeping me “on my toes!”
