“On The Run!” with the Summer Sun!
The Latest Running News and Notes in Hampton Roads from Sportswrap, Running Reporter, Jon “Flex” Leiding
Hot Times Are Everywhere!
Last week, we had a light racing schedule but, some heavy results strating with the Triskaidekaphobia 5K. The Men rocked the Top Three places with Kurtis Steck, just 17, winning in 16:58. Williamsburg Masters standout, John Piggott, was just seconds behind with a 17:09, followed by good friend of the blog, Todd Kessler, in 17:41. The Ladies were led by another good running friend, Jennifer Quarles, with a 19:33. She’s having a very good season. Here’s to continued success!
It’s “Go” Time!
Summer “fun runs” continue over the next two weeks for both the Tuesday Night, Tidewater Striders Summer Series Runs at Norfolk’s Botanical Gardens. Wednesdays in the Outer Banks, the Brindley Beach folks are offering up Wednesday Morning 5K Runs as well.
Young Runners Unite!
If you have young runners between 4 and 12 years old, looking to improve their efforts, Virginia Wesleyan offers a Marlins Youth Running Camp, Saturday morning. Coach Matt Littleton has full day of activities for campers. My daughter really enjoyed success last year. The session about “setting goals” was one of her favorites. There is still time to get in!
Let’s Get Wet!
Many of my friends and even neighbors are training for the Allen Stone Run, Swim, Run Memorial Races at 31st Street Saturday. I won’t be there but, with the Summer weather, I’d spend WAY too much time just swimming! Seriously, fast times to you all! Shout out to my buddy, Jason Marlowitz just getting back into running. Saw him out training recently. He’s ready. Good Luck, Jason!
Feedback Time!
One of the first interviews I did “On The Run” was with he speedy Ryan Carroll. He is not only fast but a great friend of Running, who shares information with others and gives some great advice as well. My Mother asked me a while ago: “What does Ryan do with all his medals and trophies he wins?” Recently, I asked and he shared with me that he keeps his “Major” awards but that he keeps a shoebox for the other and that once it’s filled, they get donated. Great groups like Medals 4 Mettle have a
network of physicians and volunteers then awards these medals attached to a Medals4Mettle ribbon to children and adults fighting debilitating illnesses who might not be able to run a race, but are in a race of their own just to continue to live their life. You can learn more about them at medals4mettle.org. It’s a great idea for us all. Thanks Ryan for answering my Mom’s question!
