Heat Repeat

June 21st, 2012 at 7:50 am by under Weather

Some folks may have accidentally stumbled in here looking for a blog about the on-fire NBA team the Miami Heat, but no.. sorry…Instead we are talking about the local heat and temperatures like yesterday.  Highs yesterday were in the mid 90s in the metro with upper 90s inland.  It was 94 at Norfolk International, but it got up to 97 in Williamsburg and Franklin.  There isn’t much change to the forecast for today.  This morning we started a couple of degrees warmer, so we’ll end up a couple of degrees hotter.  Highs will be in the mid-upper 90s in the metro with high near 100 inland.  A sea breeze may kick-in and cool down some areas near the coast.  The heat index will be between 98 and 105 today.  Remember that’s what it feels like when you combine the heat and the humidity.  In higher humidity your sweat doesn’t evaporate as easily.   So it’s harder for the body to cool down in higher heat indices.  Slow down and drink plenty of fluids.  Tomorrow we’ll see a few showers and storms late in the day.  They will be out ahead of a cold front that will cool things down a bit for the weekend.  Highs will be back in the mid-upper 80s on Saturday and Sunday.

We didn’t have too many reports of smoke this morning.  There are some air quality alerts south of the viewing area, but nothing here.  It is something that we’ll have to monitor though over the next couple of days.  Again, this is coming from the wildfire that is near New Bern N.C.

Not much of an update for tropical storm Chris.  It’s over 1,600 miles east of Norfolk and heading northeast over cooler waters.  The winds did bump up to 60mph for a while, but it will likely weaken by later today.

Have a good one and try to stay cool.

We’ll cool things down a bit for the weekend. Highs will be back in the 80s. I like the heat, but I could do without the humidity. Have a good one. Jeremy.
