On The Run Again!

A BIG CHKD Thanks!

What a good time at the CHKD run in Downtown Norfolk as the Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters 8K run, 2 mile walk, and one mile run took of from Town Point Park this past Saturday. WAVY TV 10, FOX 43, and the Hampton Roads Morning Show were happy to be sponsors and our own Bruce Rader and Stephanie Harris were kind enough to help MC the event.

Speaking of the 8K, Congrats to Caleb Doan, the Overall winner in 25:40, holding off the surging Ryan Carroll and Justin Turner to round out the Top Three. The Mile run feature SO MANY cute kids doing a wonderful job. If you were out there, a nice “Well Done” to you.

At the Warhill 5K on the Peninsula, Williamsburg’s Daniel Shaye rocked the 3.1 mile course in 17:40, while Karen Terry, who we mentioned recently here, kept her winning ways going with an 18:36. All these impressive efforts included many ladies who set age group course records. My favorite was Tami Graf, just 75 years young, setting her age group record in 33:18. WOW!

Rockin’ with Renee!

Many of you know Renee High, the two time Olympic Marathon Qualifier and one of the fastest women I know. She took a few moments to chat and share with us, just after another First Place finish at the CHKD 8K. We always appreciate our “Friends On the Run!”

Best Wishes in the future, Renee! We enjoy sharing your efforts here, “On The Run!”

Two For The Price Of One

Usually, if I get an interview, I am quite pleased. This past weekend, I got more than I had hoped. The Hampton Roads Runners were hanging out, asking me “when can we share our efforts and story with you?” I said “how about now!” Always a fun group and progressively getting faster, here’s the HRR group “On The Run!”

Thanks guys for the time! Hope to run with them soon!

Now onto this Week!

Wednesday, you gotta go to the Outer Banks! Head to Jenette’s Pier at 7:30 in the morning for the Sunrise 5K and Little Crab Claw. This Saturday, the Peninsula Road Runners feature the Chesty Puller Twin Bridge 10K event. Down the road, the Beatrice Young 5k takes off from the beautiful Sandy Bottom Nature Park. At the Henricus Historical Park in Chester, the Henricus Dauber Dash is on the Menu, while Sunday rounds out the busy week with the Diamond House 5k at Mount Trashmore.

Three weeks from now, I will be excited to check out the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge Bridge Bash & River Run. This 5K event goes high! How high, you ask? How about as the tallest bridge in Hampton Roads? This will end up being an all day event, including fireworks! Ann Hupp, of Mettle Events and a great friend “On The Run”really knows how to put together challenging events. You can bet I’ll be trying to get with her closer to the date.

Major Shout Out!

Billy Edwards Somewhere Near Kansas

Biking and swimming are great accompaniments to Running, Iso I gotta thank Billy Edwards, standout runner form the area, now living in Colorado for the hookup. About a month ago, I was telling us about the 4Mil bike team that was riding cross country and raising funds for military folks. this past Saturday, it started! Two teams supported by Team 4Mil, a wounded veterans team & a US Service-member team, began their Race Across America journey from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD. Best wishes to the team and you can follow their progress at team4mil.org.

One More, Then I Need to Run!

Lashawn Merritt

This weekend will be BIG for some local Running standouts. Portsmouth’s Lashawn Merritt is looking to silence his critics as he defends his 400 meter Gold Medal in London, while Williamsburg’s Ed Moran will hope to qualify for the 5K and 10K events. Throw in William & Mary’s Elaina Balouris in her bid to go to the Olympic for the Women’s 10K and we have some local runners that could really make a splash…across the pond. Watch the Olympic Trials on NBC starting Friday in Eugene, Oregon. Good Luck!

Ed Moran

That’s the Latest. I always like your feedback and story ideas. I’ll catch you soon…”On The Run!”

Great reporting, as always Jon…just a quick update on the trials, it appears local standout Ed Moran will be out of the trials with a stress reaction, but is setting his sights on a possible Fall Marathon and states you will be seeing a lot more of him on the professional road racing scene!

    Thanks Ryan!

Our good friend, Greg D. also mentioned it to me. I know the WAVY weekend Sports crew were hoping to have more local flavor at this years Summer Olympics Trials. It is a shame he won’t be competing this weekend but, he’s is someone we will be watching in the Fall.

Always appreciate the feedback and thanks for checking us out here on WAVY.com! See you soon!

  3. Daniel Shaye says:

John, I’ve really enjoyed your columns. You’re doing a lot to promote endurance athletics in general, and running in specific. Great work! Also, thanks for noticing that I (and so many others) have been running well.

One update: Ed Moran’s out of the trials due to an ill-timed injury (http://running.competitor.com/2012/06/news/ed-moran-out-of-olympic-trials_53975). He’ll be back, though… in a big way.
