LMF: Come Sail Away
Of course I had to go there. This weekend was perhaps one of the biggest ever showcases for local music. Things kicked off Friday with an awesome performance on The Hampton Roads Show by Skye Zentz. Skye performed two songs off of her upcoming album, Bird Heart (June 21), with her band, The Gents. You can see her perform more selections from this great album today at the Front Street Park at Fort Norfolk. Her hour long set begins at 1:30.
The Virginia Beach Sportsplex was on fire with the much anticipated Shaggfest. Bison kicked things off at 12:30 and the show blazed on through the day and night until headliner Timbaland closed the show by bringing out surprise guest Missy Elliott. I hear Shaggfest 2013 is being planned and from all accounts on how Shaggfest 2012 went, next year will be even bigger.
Bison had a busy day Saturday as they opened Shaggfest and then quickly loaded up their gear and headed off to the Harborfest/OpSail festivities to perform a set at Town Point Park. It was kind of like the Hampton Roads version of when Phil Collins played both Live Aid concerts in 1985. He played the London show then hoped on the Concorde and played the Philadelphia concert. Ahh..memories. Anyway, they blew the roof off the Boathouse stage with a jam packed set. With the tent packed to capacity, I’m pretty sure they’ll be moved to the main stage next year…that is if they aren’t playing Bonnaroo 2013.
You might be wondering which event I went to this weekend. Well, I didn’t attend Shaggfest or
visit Town Point Park (I did check out the MHI Park and Front Street park Friday with my son, Carson. He loved the Ferris Wheel). I decided to do something special for my wife and surprise with a trip up to Baltimore to see her favorite performer, Kristin Chenoweth perform. I’m pretty sure my wife loved it and it was a great little getaway for the two us. We are expecting our second child this summer, so who knows when we’ll have the chance to get away.
That’s all for me today. I’ll catch up with you later this week.
Yup! The Wife LOVED it!
