Tornado Watch Until 9pm

June 1st, 2012 at 2:21 pm by under Weather

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Tornado Watch for our entire area except in Dare County, N.C. Dare Co. has a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 10pm. This watch lasts until 9pm. Remember a tornado watch means conditions are favorable for development of storms which could contain tornadoes, hail, and damaging winds all across our area.

Strong Storm System Moving in Tonight.

We have had strong south winds almost all day which has helped to boost the heat and humidity across Hampton Roads. These are the ingredients for thunderstorms, another ingredient is the cold front moving in from the west. Now this front will spawn storm, but it won’t likely move through till after midnight tonight. The biggest for these stronger/severe storms will be ahead of the front.

Moderate Risk of Storms

We will continue to see storms develop for the remainder of the afternoon and also into the evening. If you have an outdoor event tonight, such as a concert outside stay sky aware and monitor the latest forecasts. These events may be impacted by these storms tonight.

Strong Storms This Afternoon

We will have updates on these storms on WAVY TV and also on our website at WAVY.com

Some storms have already formed, but they are scattered. More storms will come in from the south or west through the evening.

Sirens went off in base housing off of Big Bethel Road in Hampton. Any activity in that area?

For several hours now, WAVY 10 has been broadcasting coverage of the severe weather in Hampton Roads. Unfortunately for the thousands of residents who depend on captioning, especially during severe weather conditions, are not receiving the same information as the general public.
