We returned from a week's trip out west to the Richmond airport with the intention of driving from Richmond to home late on Saturday night, when as it turns out VDOT closed two crossings to the southside. (we live on Willoughby Spit) Having seen the signs saying the "HRBT was closed eastbound from Friday 9:00pm to Monday 5:00am" on the way down I-64 we were a bit perturbed; we tried the James River Bridge which was closed, then tried to access the I-664 south bound at Warrick when we noted there was a sign stating "no delay on the HRBT". After a few choice words, my husband took I-664 north and we crossed the HRBT about 1:30am on Sunday morning without a hitch.
All this after a long flight to Richmond then an unnecessary delay of 1.5 hours wandering around Newport News trying to get home which was less than 10 miles away but across a river.
I don't know why the crews were not working during the time we crossed, but the signage could have been corrected to when they stopped working to allow some relief on the traffic jam that occured. We were lucky when we took a chance, but many others were not so lucky.
