A Few Flakes

February 8th, 2012 at 7:47 am by under Weather

While the weather doesn’t look too lively over the next 7 days, it is possible to get a few flakes of snow in the forecast.  Let’s talk about it.  Today we have a stationary front in the region.  A weak area of low pressure will scoot along this front, and bring us some scattered rain showers later today.  This morning that same system was putting down snow showers over Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky.

Radar & Surface MapAs the system moves east it will encounter warmer temperatures with the warming of the day. So locally we will expect increasing clouds with scattered rain showers forming this afternoon. There will be some snow over the Appalachians as well as up towards Washington D.C. While I doubt it will be a good powdery snow, it will still help the ski resorts in Western Virginia and West Virginia. Today's Forecast Map

By tonight the system will have pushed through.  We’ll quickly dry out.  Before we do though it’s possible that we could get a few flakes of snow mixing in with the rain north of the metro area.  Surface temperatures are expected to be above freezing.  So it should be no big deal.

Future Trak (Midnight Tonight)

Tomorrow we are cool and dry with highs in the upper 40s.  A bit warmer for Friday, yet still dry.  Then we’ll get a big cool down this weekend.  On Saturday, there is still the possibility for a few spotty showers and maybe a few flurries.  However, the models are in disagreement with the moisture.  We’ll need a couple more model runs before I type the word snow into the forecast.  For now let’s just say a few flakes or flurries could fall Saturday in the late afternoon or evening, but the jury is still way out.
Finally to wrap up, we do predict warmer temperatures towards the middle of next week.   So the cooler weather is temporary.
