Subtropical System In The Works?

February 6th, 2012 at 7:49 am by under Weather

While we think of February as cold and Wintry, I actually have a warm topic to start with today.  South of Florida there is a cluster of thunderstorms which looks like it is organizing.  It is possible that it could briefly become a subtropical depression or storm before merging with a stationary front.  Here it is on radar:

Possible Subtropical System

While this system is well to our south, it will actually impact us a little bit.  It won’t develop into a strong low, but it will eventually merge with a front and move northeast as a weak system.  It will throw some moisture to the north of it.  So tonight we will see some scattered showers as weak overrunning takes place.

Tonight's Forecast Map

By the way before that moisture moves up we’ll see plenty of sunshine today with highs in the low 50s.

Tomorrow after a quick shower early in the morning we will dry out.  We could however see another quick shower early on Wednesday as a cold front approaches from the northwest.  The forecast is cool and quiet for the next seven days.  However, it does look like a strong shot of cold air will try to force its way down here next Sunday.  I don’t do much long range forecasting, but keep this in mind.  There is a very cold airmass over Europe right now.  These cold airmasses create large dips in the jetstream. We call these planetary waves.  They are common, but not talked about much in a daily forecast.  This wave can actually travel around the planet.  So keep an eye out for a good shot of cold air in the next 9-13 days.  It may not create Wintry weather, but a good stretch of colder weather is possible.  Hopefully, it will pan out better than my Super Bowl prediction.  Here is the Farmer’s Almanac forecast for that time frame: Almanac.
