The Latest Running News and Notes around Hampton Roads from Sportswrap Running Reporter, Jon “Flex” Leiding”
Another Great Weekend!
Hope your training is going well for whatever goal you may have. This past weekend was jam packed full of action, so lets just jump right in! The Peninsula featured the Transitions 5K along the Mateson Trail, won by 19 year old, Mike Stohler in a swift 19:11, while the Ladies were led by Ginny Phillips with a 25:21. These days, everyone seems to be “On The Run”, including Hampton Mayor, Molly Ward, who also won her age group! Congratulations Mayor!
Keeping up the speed, the Red, White, & Blue 5K at the Coast Guard Station in Yorktown Saturday featured a New Course record from the Women’s Winner, Karen Terry, who we’ve mentioned here before. The 22 year old bested the record, set last year, by 32 seconds. She covered the 3.1 miles in 19:33. That’s a strong effort! On the Men’s side, Greg Holden was the Overall winner in 17:22. If you need proof that great racing happens on both sides of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnels, there you go…
On the Southside, the Virginia Freedom Festival 5K was won in 17:27 by Matthew Winning. Great name for a Runner! The Women’s Winner was Dena Goble with an impressive 22:01. That’s an average of about seven minutes a mile… Nice!
While most people took time to remember 9/11, Old Dominion University hosted the 9/11 Memorial 5K. Emanuel Richardson sped away with the Victory in 17:18. What’s most impressive is that the youngster from Norfolk is listed as only 11! Wow! With youth on the menu, 18 year old Melissa Johnston captured the Ladies title in 22:20.
Now with all those races mentioned form last week, I didn’t give a big “shout out” to our friends who took place in the Outer Banks Triathlon this past weekend. Triathlons include a Swim, Bike Ride, and Run. My tip of the cap to all who weren’t afraid to “Tri!”
Now, Let’s Move On!
Just because it was busy last week in the “757” doesn’t mean it will be slow this week. Head to the Peninsula for a great run or two. Over at the Mariner’s Museum the Liberty Fit To Worship 5K is set for action. All that’s missing is you! Just up the road, the Hare & The Tortoise 8K will take off from New Quarter Park. They also offer a One Miler… Sunday, the Run for the Green and Gold 5K
This weekend the Project Athena Series comes to Virginia Weslyan Saturday, offering a 10K race thru some trails and roads, along with a 5K adventure hike. The Project Athena Foundation supports Women survivors of medical or traumatic setbacks realize their adventurous dreams through scholarships, coaching, and specialized equipment. Should be fun- Maybe I’ll see you there!
Last week, triathletes went to the Outer Banks for competition. This week, they’ll take aim at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront for the Sandman Triathlon. A 1K swim, followed by a 14 mile bike ride, then topped off with a 5K run.
