Our children: education and obesityMarch 24th, 2011 at 4:40 pm by Stephanie Harris under Health, Personalities
Today Governor Bob McDonnell vetoed a bill that would have required 150 minutes of physical education each week, in school.
It was aimed at attacking the epidemic of childhood obesity in our state. It did not require schools to hire additional instructors nor build new facilities.
Today, nearly one in three Virginia children is overweight or obese. I’m not sure if more PE is the answer, especially if it takes away from instruction time. After all, our children are also lagging behind some other countries in the areas of math and science. But if it did not interfere with instructional time and did not cost more money, why not? What do you think?
