Midday Update

December 15th, 2010 at 1:25 pm by under Uncategorized, Weather

While the previous blog had a lot of good information, I wanted to update things based off of the latest models and National Weather Service.  There is now a Winter Storm Watch in effect for Surry and Sussex counties for tomorrow.

Winter Storm Watch

You can bet that there will be more advisories and/or warnings for tomorrow’s event.  I’ve updated my snow forecast totals:

Snow Forecast

The NAM model came in with a sensible scenario.  It’s raw data came up with just under 5 inches for the area.  However, our model still is forecasting 1-2″ with higher amounts in the Watch area.  The GFS is very aggressive on precipitation.  However, it also warms things up and brings rain to the region.

Check out my previous blog. It has a lot of details about the models and also talks about the system for Saturday night/early Sunday.

    Jeremy,
Just wanted to say thanks for all the updates. I know its a busy time for you guys but it is very much appreciated. As an “amateur” meteorologist I really enjoy getting more data than what is on the local news but not so much that I want to go and try to interpret the NAM or GFS. Thats why I truly enjoy this blog, its a great middle ground for those of us who want just a little more depth to their forecast. Keep up the good work.

NWS was calling for 2-4 inches this AM and your blog mirrored their forecast. Now the NWS is calling for 1-3 and you are following along. What do YOU really think is going to happen?

    Jermey,

Tomorrow my TV class is to have a trip to WAVY Studios. I was very excited as I would finally get my first view of the weather center. YAY! But I have been tracking this storm with some sadness as I knew we would see enough precip for amounts. We leave around 9AM and arrive in Portsmouth by 10:30 I believe. Hopefully the trip is still on tomorrow. Otherwise, I will literally be so disappointed haha. See you tomorrow, I hope!

Looking at the models, I think the metro-area will likely see 2-4″ of snow tomorrow. The weekend storm looks more interesting… 6″+? Possible!

Hey, I live in Knotts Island. How much snow do you think will accumulate here as cold as it is. You do a great job, just wondering.

I don’t know how to read these models lol..what is the total expected snow fall amount for Portsmouth area on the border of Suffolk/Chesapeake area?? I’m curious as to how the schools are going to operate being that the snow isn’t supposed to hit til when about 9am??

I find it apalling that Chrysler Hall is still planning on holding the Lion King tonight. All those that have purchased expensive tickets in good faith will loose their money because they are not willing to risk their life to get to Norfolk. Not everyone attending lives in Norfolk. It will teach me NOT to buy tickets to events in Norfolk again!!!
