A Little More Optimistic

September 1st, 2010 at 12:00 am by under Weather

Just a quick post tonight.

As of the 11:00 PM update (& forecast models), I’m a bit more optimistic that Hurricane Earl will remain far enough out to sea so as not to present huge problems. We’re not out of the woods yet, but things may be looking just a little better.

The afternoon and evening model runs tended to push the storm slightly farther out to sea…and in a tightly-grouped consensus…which resulted in the National Hurricane Center’s forecast being just slightly farther out to sea, as well. I’d like to see another model run or two to really confirm this, so continue to watch the Hurricane Center’s updates. And of course, Jeremy Wheeler will be on the air for WAVY News 10 at Sunrise.

Winds: The farther southward and close to the coast that you live, the greater the impact. So the Outer Banks (Hatteras especially) is likely to receive the greatest winds…steady at tropical storm force (40 mph) with higher gusts to around 50-60 mph. Farther north, the Virginia Beach oceanfront will likely see steady winds from 30 to 40 mph with wind gusts to over tropical storm force. Lesser winds (breezy) would be likely inland just a mile or two. The Peninsula, Eastern Shore, and points northward will likely just see breezy conditions. High surf and beach erosion will be very significant.

Rain: The Outer Banks could see significant rain in amounts as high as 2″ to 3″…perhaps more in isolated spots. The Virginia Beach oceanfront will likely see spotty bands of rain…perhaps an inch. That rain drops off rapidly inland and northward. There could be little to no rain for much of the area.

Tides: This is still a bit more indeterminate, but right now it looks like any tidal flooding should be minor to the low end of moderate for the area. High tides should be well below what we saw for last November’s Nor’easter. High tides will generally be 4:00 to 5:00 AM and PM for Thursday and Friday. Right now, it looks like Friday afternoon’s high tide (~5:00) should be the highest. Stay tuned on this one. However, I’m not too terribly concerned.

Again…not out of the woods yet, but a little more optimistic!

My questioning is what do you take of the trough in the midwest. It has slowed down somewhat and is forecast to get here a bit later. The later it gets the closer Earl can come to shore. Sure Earl will turn itself, but that trough creates almost a bumper effect for us.

Just a though. Hopefully we won’t see much.

Agree Zach. I’m probably overly worried, but I live in Churchton, 2 houses off the bay. I haven’t heard anything for us. Isabelle is still a vibrant memory as this area as well as Shadyside was hit pretty hard. I’m hoping to hear something for us that’s a bit more descriptive. Yes, I have flashlights, drinking water, 2 generators and have battened down the hatches. I’m just surprised we here by the bay haven’t been told anything.

Like I said, I’m probably overly worried, would just like some “comforting words.

We MISS Jon but people should keep their Professional and Private lives – SEPERATE!

  2. Robin says:

Thanks for the info., but where is John Cash?

    1. Wilson Garland says:

I guess they are going to block us!

    2. Beth says:

Nobody is saying anything about John Cash’s status…rumor has it he has been fired. He will be missed.

      1. Jay says:

weird he might have been fired????

        1. carrie browning says:

what did happen to john cash

  3. Pam says:

Please don’t tell me the rumors are true. Jon Cash is gone?
This is bad news for me and for this station.

  4. Wilson Garland says:

The one thing I am looking for is the wind speed at various locations for this storm. I have a boat and need to know what to do early. Only yesterday at noon, your station reported no wind no rain on present track which was a great help as a friend was planning to drive from Great Bridge to Willoughby to tie his boat but decided to wait until Thursday afternoon helped by your report. Now this morning you give the impression the entire area will get hurricane winds. Can’t you report the correct winds for all areas based on the current track. That way I can decide if I need to move the boat or tie down with more lines.

Daily wind speed and directions would be great also!

    Thanks

  5. Tyler says:

I leave in the Chick Beach Area what will the tides be like?

    1. Jeremy Wheeler says:

Think you’ll get some minor tidal flooding. Hopefully, not too bad unless Earl is a little further west.

  6. Donna says:

How you compare Earl to Isabel? Thanks

  7. Amanda says:

    Where is Jon Cash???

  8. Wilson Garland says:

You really need to settle your differences with Jon and get him back! I don’t agree with him at all times but he is good, just don’t tell him! LOL

  9. AMD says:

Thanks, Don. I need that this morning. :)

  10. Lynn says:

With national weather forcast stating that they are “thinking” Earl will take a more westerly track, what will be the actual impact for Hampton Roads? I am in Hampton the Buckroe area actually less than half a mile away from the beach. When will the exact track be available? What can we expect if Earl decides to take more to the west?

Keeping our fingers crossed in Hampton.

  11. Gabrielle says:

My husband and I live in Newport News, Va. What weather conditions should we expect and should we get items to be prepared?

  12. Wilson Garland says:

Come on Don, man up and post our comments!

  13. Jason says:

  16. Andrea says:

WHERE IS JON CASH…………..nothing is being said??? I heard he was fired…he was a great man that really made the weather there at WAVY10. Because of him my son wants to be a meterologist. Why the quietness from the station. He was my favorite!!

    1. Vicki says:

I’d like to know where Jon Cash is. He and the morning team always had such good team spirit. It made my day better because they seemed to get along so well. Always joking and laughing and talking about their families just made the day a little brighter. Like Jeremy and Nichole too, but where is Jon??

  17. Jackie says:

Where is Jon Cash? If he was fired please tell me why.

  18. Not telling says:

Its simple, they either bring back John Cash, or I find another news station…

  19. Sandy says:

It would be nice for WAVY TV 10 to say what has become of Jon Cash. If he has gone on to work somewhere else, please let us know. He just seems to be MIA. Make some sort of comment on his status with the station. Thanks!!!

  20. cindy says:

wavy 10 keeps changing faces …well ..i’ve had enough…loosing Cash was the last straw..think i’ll start watchin channel 13…until cash comes back to a local station…have my fingers crossed

  21. Laurie says:

My husband and I were hoping that Jon was on vacation, but not for this long!!! It’s not like him.
“Where in the world is…..Jon Cash? I have noticed that Jeremy has been using new words like “I” or this is “My”; which is leaving us to believe he is trying to put “his” stamp on Jon’s morning spot! If Jon is no longer a part of the team, then Jeremy needs to step it up and give more detail and get more technical to back up what he is forecasting!

  22. Corinna Staples says:

What ever happend to Jon Cash ? Can anyone answer that question please why the big secret that is not fair to the wavy 10 viewers.

  23. stacy cantrell says:

I understand you aren’t going to release details, but to make no comment on the departure of such a beloved TV personality is a shame. What you have now is a sad comparison to Jon Cash. Time to channel surf!

  24. karen says:

Sorry, WAVY TV but i am watching weather elsewhere.

  25. Mignon says:

Where in the world is Jon Cash? Though Jeremy Wheeler is awfully cute, Cash’s personality is greatly missed. I hope he is only on vacation and will return soon!!
WAVY SAY SOMETHING!! I never post, but this missing meterologist is driving me nuts!!

  26. Nita says:

Please tell us what the deal is regarding Jon. I really like him and it is not the same in the morning without him.

    1. connie payne says:

He has become a full time evangelist. Type his name into your search bar and you can see all the info.

  27. Lynnette says:

Where is Jon Cash? I think that if you would like to keep viewers, it would be a respectful act to tell us what has happened to Jon Cash. Many people watched the news and weather on Wavy 10 because of Jon and now that he is gone without a word, we are being pushed to watch other stations. I don’t get the same details about weather from Jeremy and the other man sitting in for Sagay. What is going on? Please answer us.

    Thanks!

  28. Deb says:

I do not miss Mr. Cash. His humor rode the edge of offending me, slipping often into sarcasm and self-centered ego. Team player? You must be kidding. Remember when Kerry first joined the morning team? After a run of morning anchors, I remember cheering her on as she dealt with Cash’s tongue-in-cheek rudeness, and it was good to see her masterfully choose when to ignore his tone and remarks.
Don Roberts, Kerri Furey, and Jeremy Wheeler make a bright team, emphasis on the word ‘team’, and I’m now watching WAVY more than when Cash was there.

  29. Bring him back to where he belongs. at home

  30. Keri says:

I, for one, agree with Deb (Oct 5th). Jon Cash always irritated me with his humor. I must admit that he did produce some nice graphics, but they did not make up for his lacking personality. I base the news programs that I watch on weather reporters, not for accuracy, but personality. I would watch Wavy 10 during the news and change stations whenever Jon Cash came on. I much prefer Jeremy and Sagay!
