Afternoon Update

February 6th, 2010 at 2:29 pm by Jeremy Wheeler under Weather

Here’s the afternoon update.  It’s really coming down in Portsmouth at the TV station.  A lot of areas had pockets of moderate to heavy snow.  It was just starting to stick on the southside.   A viewer from Yorktown said it is starting to stick to the roads.  Temperatures are in the lower 30s, but a lot of the temps just got to the freezing mark.  As I mentioned in a previous blog there was a lot of water on the ground, and it is tough for the snow to stick on that.  Here was a snapshot of Super Doppler 10 from about 1:30pm:

Super Doppler 10 1:30pm

Remember blue is snow and pink is mix.  However, wet snow can show up as a mix sometimes.  So I think that was the case here.  Snow will probably end in the next 3-4 hours.  The back edge of the heavy snow was out towards Emporia as you can see above.  After that we may have a few scattered light snow showers or flurries.  But we are in the thick of things right now.  As far as amounts go… Probably a dusting up to a half inch in North Carolina.  1-2″ on the southside.  2-4″ Peninsula.  3-6″ on the Middle Peninsula.  4-8″ on the Northern Neck.  4-7″ in Accomack county with 2-4″ in Northampton county, VA.
We are going into the next high tide in the next hour or two.  It should not be as high as last night’s tide.  The winds haven’t been as strong as last night.  Also, the winds are more out of the northwest at the surface.  We expect minor tidal flooding with Sewell’s Point topping off around 4.8ft.  Last night it looks like it got up to about 5.8/5.9ft.  That is pretty much moderate tidal flooding.  A blogger on here commented on how bad it got up in Dare, VA.
Tonight we’ll get some clearing.  Temperatures will easily drop to the 20s.  Any water that is out there will freeze on the roads.  Black ice will be a good bet with snow covering some roadways as well.  The secondaries will probably be rough from the Peninsula northward.  Don’t travel to D.C.  tonight.  They got hammered with 1-2 feet of snow and it is still coming down.  Richmond also had a few inches, but the snow should be tapering off there in the next couple of hours.  Drive safe everybody!

Looks like the Blackwater and Nottaway rivers are rising rapidly and will flood soon, what do you think?

    1. Jeremy Wheeler says:

They both have flood warnings (just issued) for minor flooding. Wouldn’t be surprised if there is moderate.

  2. Jeff says:

Cape Charles, VA : It’s 2:45 pm and we already have 2.5″ with 4-5″ drifts. I bet you can’t see 1/8 mile. It is blowing and snowing its behind off.

  3. John in York County says:

3 inches already on grassy areas, 1-2 inches on roadways. Extremely heavy snow, the type that sticks to everything. All trees and other objects are caked. Still snowing very hard, as it has been for the past couple of hours.

  4. cindy says:

Thanks for the update it is still coming down pretty heavy in Gloucester point.Everything seems to be sticking to the roads . alot of slush on the road too.I would think that all that will freeze tonight.

  5. cindy says:

Hi from Gloucester, just saw Jermemy give his update sharing that Gloucester may get 2 -4 inches ~ if I heard him right. Just want to let you all know that we already have at least 3 inches and the last inch came really fast. It is snowing heavy and fast! Thanks for keeping us up to date! You all do a wonderful job. :)

  6. Pam Smith says:

The snow began falling around 11a.m. and we have almost 4 inches of snow here in Williamsburg.

  7. William says:

Jeremy, I am reporting from Williamsburg, James City County over by the Williamsburg Courthouse and we already have 4″ of snow and it is still pouring down quite heavily.

  8. Liz says:

Well Jeremy….3:30pm and just over 4 inches of snow in Gloucester! It’s been snowing quite steadily here since about 10am. I think the totals for the Middle Penninsula may have been a bit under-estimated! Incidentally, how come there are never any weather reporters sent to Gloucester for live reports (down one of the back roads or higher up in the county, not simply at Gloucester Point or the Business District)? Enjoy the snow and stay safe!

    1. Jeremy Wheeler says:

I’ve got you in the 3-7″ range right now. Usually we can’t get a signal from there unless it is the satellite truck. Jason Marks is going up to Gloucester for some video.

      1. Liz says:

Oh Jeremy, thanks for responding! I can’t wait to see the broascast tonight! It is really nice to have this blog, and for so many of the weather team to post their copmments here! You guys are great! Thanks for all you do and for the great job by everyone at WAVY!

  9. Mickie says:

Are they going to send out salt trucks? Will the roads be icy later?

      Hopefully and yes.

any news on when and what time will it stop snowing

  20. pc72orf says:

We’ve gotten around a 1/2 an inch here in the Bay View/Belaire section of Norfolk. Looking at what’s coming down-stream from the ‘classic’ bay-influence… think we’ll see around an inch or so here total.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen snow on the ground two weekends in a row. :)

  21. Liza says:

reporting from york county..almost 4 inches!

  24. Toano says:

    Hey Don:

Your map says that we only got 3.3 inches in Williamsburg / Toano. How about coming up up to shovel my 6 to 8 inches in my driveway?

  25. Liza says:

LOL i know! and the map said only an inch and half in york county, well how bout you shovedl my5 inches ????!

    1. Jeremy Wheeler says:

That was probably doppler estimated and that depends on where you click the mouse sometimes. I have the snow totals up. Thanks for the report. I’ll post it on a blog later this morning.
