A Cold and Stormy February!

February 1st, 2010 at 5:34 am by Jon Cash under Uncategorized, Weather

A very active pattern is setting up the next couple of weeks.  The jet stream will be split into two wind streams…a southern one that will bring moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean and a northern one that will bring cold weather from Canada.  It would be surprising if we *did not* receive more winter precipitation sometime in the next two weeks.

The next event I am watching closely is for Friday and Saturday (February 5-6th).  The pattern is very similar to the setup from last weekend.  A low pressure system will travel from Southern California through Texas and into the Gulf of Mexico during the week and then track south of us later Friday and Saturday.  Cold high pressure north and west of the region will supply the area with a fresh shot of Canadian air.  Water temps of 37 degrees will help.  It’s too early to tell how much snow verses rain or even sleet we may get this far out but it looks very interesting…stay tuned!

Hey Jon we have about a foot of snow up here in the upper part of Gloucester. I just saw you on TV talking about rain on Tuesday. I sure hope that’s all it is we really don’t need any more snow here. Then I saw where you said it could in fact snow again over the weekend. I’m not sure anyone up in this area can take more of this mess. It’s nice to look at but hard to work in. My husband worked Saturday night plowing snow in and around the upper part of King William County close to Richmond. The roads have gotten a bit better but not much. The side roads are terrible and then rain only to frezze over night will not make it better. I’d guess that if it does snow again over the weekend we will still have snow left from this last snow. What a mess that will be!! Keep up the good work and good to see you back. Jeremy was good but nothing is better than you getting all excited about the snow and wearing the snow flake. I sure hope they show you how Jeremy wore your snow flake!
    Have a good day!

  3. Zach says:

Glad to hear your back Jon. I hope you had a great vacation, but like you said, I too believe an active pattern is setting up via the last models I looked at. Just don’t leave for vacation any time soon and you might see some snow. =) Have a great week and I will watch this system closely as I know you will too.

  8. Kevin says:

Wow I hope we get more snow :) Had fun with the kids this weekend :)

  9. Charlene says:

Its this for Virginia only? I live in Hertford County but I rely on your weather forecast…Does it look like we may get a repeat of last week?

  10. What time today do you anticipate the roads beginning to freeze over again?

  11. Gram says:

    Woo hoo! im gettin excited!

  12. bob says:

will there be school for newport news tomorrow?>

  13. Peggy in Moyock says:

I totally trust your forecast. You really know your stuff and have faith that whatever God wants will be. Your doing a great job and praise you for your gift that the Lord has given you. Keep up the good work. Look forward to what you have to say each morning, because I have a husband that has to travel extremely far for work each day and four boys who attend school. So the weather forecast is highly important to me to keep my family safe and you are the one in whom I trust to say the truth. Hope this finds you well and your family too. God Bless

Alright, we need to work some wishing magic and move the low further south this weekend. We don’t want another big snow storm for Richmond and north while we see heavy cold rain again!! Rain is nooo fun!

  15. Brittany says:

I like how this sounds Jon!! I think you need to go on vacation again…LoL!

  16. Ryan says:

Well it seems like when wavy tv 10 tries to predict snow across the area which is from North Carolina through Virgina the snow line and amounts always seem to move away from North Carolina and we never get the snow that is called for but when it is rain it is always right with the amount and the amounts never seem to move any from where they were first posted. It seems that nobody can predict snow but they predict rain.

    1. Brandon says:

i feel the same way ryan

Welcome Back Jon! We had just over 12″ in my backyard in Gloucester, and I can honestly say I enjoyed every minute of the past weekend’s weather! What a beautiful and peaceful time….at least until husband thought it would be a great time to clean out the bedroom closets, that is.

You and Jeremy shake your snowflakes for us again this weekend! Another 12″ would suit me just fine. And yes, the side roads are terrible as the previous poster indicated. Astoundingly horrible, and haven’t even caught a glimpse of a snowplow.

Please advise the husbands in your audience that you should not do any “Spring Cleaning” when it snows. Tell them it’s bad luck or something, okay?

    Yeeeaaay Snow!!! Bring it on!

  18. Nick says:

What is the deal with the road crews in Chesapeake? I cross over the city line to Va Beach and the roads are clear. Chesapeake seems to not really care. This is terrible. Whoever heads that department is weak! Maybe we could ask the other local cities for help?

  19. Stuart says:

All I see is rain this weekend seem like it well be just warm enough for only rain.

  20. SHAWN says:

WELCOME BACK JON!WE ARE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEE WHAT YOUR SNOW HOPE INDEX IS FOR THE UP COMING EVENTS! (HOPEFULLY IT’S A 10)
JUST THINK IT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING OF FEB!! KEEP THE SNOW COMING!!

  21. Billy says:

    Hey Jon,

Welcome Back! If it snows again this weekend, will you try and get Jeremy to wear the snowflake? What’s the Snow Hope?

  22. livinginhampton says:

    Hello,

Just wondering when/if WAVY 10 is willing to commit to some type of snow amounts, if any for the weekend. I would like to know so that if there is snow coming I can get a shovel before Friday when they will all be gone again. Rock salt would be nice as well. This ice is NUTS.
If not a commitment to snow totals, maybe we could use a shovel graph. Like one shovel could be light snow, and five could be viewers would more than likely need a shovel to move the snow from their driveway.
With this fun little chart, you do not have to give totals, but just strongly suggest that there will be enough snow to shovel.
    Thanks so much!
    Have a great night!!!

  23. Brenda B. says:

Welcome home, Jon. We missed you! I hope that you had a great time in Colorado!

The snow is just what I had prayed for. It is soooooo beautiful! I know you’re excited about this weekend’s forecast. I also know you’ll be watching it closely for us in order to keep us informed and I thank you!

  24. Teresa says:

Hi, I sure hope the snow won’t be as bad as this weekend. It ruined my planned weekend cause all my husband’s flights from Detroit were cancelled coming to Norfolk. He’s trying to come to visit again this weekend, so please tell me it won’t be as bad :(

  25. Geena Ackerly says:

Hey Jon!Welcome Back ! The snow was soooo beautiful and I am a big fan of snow being from West Tennessee and living here now. We never got any snow there. I was in heaven watching the snow fall last weekend but the only negative about it was that you weren’t here to enjoy it. I look so forward to your excitement about the snow and Wavy 10 did an oustanding job of covering the storm. Thanks to you all and keeping my fingers crossed for more snow this weekend! Let it Snow Let it Snow :) Geena from Portsmouth!

  26. Debbie says:

Welcome back Jon! I agree that Jeremy did a great job while you were gone. Both of you are on the ball and usually right with the weather forecasts. Keep it up! The snow was beautiful – my dogs really enjoyed it! Thanks for all you do!

  27. viewer007 says:

Ryan, with snow there are a couple of extra variables than with rain. Rain alone moves in with a broader area of coverage making it easier to predict affected areas.

  28. rob says:

glad your back Jon,to keep the snow flake safe !that Wheeler dude put on his ear!!!!!!but other than that,he did good

  29. Matt says:

We are glad you are back. Now that you are I am hoping that you tell me that we will get more of the same this weekend. I had so much fun playing in the snow for the first time with my Mom and sister. I want to experience that again. Oh, yeah, when the snow keeps us out of school it gives us more family time. So, please send me some more of the same this weekend.

    Thank You,
    Matt

  30. Greg says:

No offense, but after talking to family in Norfolk ( who are from upstate NY) we can only shake our heads in that schools are closed in WAVY land.

We had about 6″ of new snow Monday, everything was open, schools open, etc. -10F over the weekend and snow here in the Syracuse area.

Jon, you need some lake effect snow down there :)

( and some decent snow plows)

  31. Mona says:

Anyone else interested in why Jon hasn’t mentioned the snow hope index? What’s going on?

  32. lbz says:

    what about tuesday???

  33. Gram says:

i am SO glad to see Jeremy doing more evening forecasts!
no offense, but Don Slater is quite a jinxer and is NOT enthusiastic about snow :(

  34. Tom says:

Why didnt Jeremy wear you ugly snowflake?

  35. Tom says:

Just kidding – we all love the snowflake! I really wondering if that snow was going to make it into NE NC?
