Good-bye from Meteorologist Cheryl Nelson

January 17th, 2010 at 7:14 pm by Cheryl Nelson under Personalities, Weather

To WAVY-TV 10 and Fox 43 viewers,

I wanted to let you know that I will be leaving WAVY-TV 10 and Fox 43.  This is my last weekend on-air doing weathercasts.  Weather has been my passion since I was 9 years old, but I’ve decided to pursue other interests and spend weekends with family and friends.  It was a bittersweet decision for me because I truly enjoy my job as a broadcast meteorologist.  I’ve had a terrific run in my home state of Virginia at WAVY and Fox over the past 3 years and I thank you for your loyal viewership and support.  I’ve made wonderful friends here and I have enjoyed volunteering in the Hampton Roads community.  In addition to weather events, my highlights have included the Holiday Lights Contest, Friday Night Flights, my “Pet of the Week” segments, and announcing Penn State’s football game score at the end of some Saturday evening newscasts.  :)

Best wishes and sunshine always,

Cheryl Nelson

  2. Richard L. Hedges says:

I’m really going to miss you!! I enjoyed watching your forecasts on the weekend and during severe weather events!! You were very professional, and somewhat accurate (due to the topography of this area, it was very difficult to make accurate weather forecasts!!) WAVY TV 10 won’t be the same without you!! I wish you the best of luck, and I know you made the best career decision for you!! I might have to find another network to watch, since it won’t be the same watching you on WAVY TV 10!!

      Penn State!

  9. Neal Steele says:

I didn’t see being a judge at the Womanless Beauty Pageant as one of your highlights? A mistake maybe?

  10. Bill says:

Cheryl, best of luck to you in your future endeavors. You will be truly missed. You were the only “on-air” forecaster in the area who delivered the forecast in a professional, yet very friendly and comfortable, manner. I always looked forward to the weekend since I knew that I would be able to get a forecast without the silliness and/or stumbling presentations that are prevalent with other area forecasters. Sadly to say, your gain is our loss.

  11. WIlly Brown says:

    Buh-bye.

    Good morning Cheryl,
A tear went to my eye as I realized that this was your last weather broadcat Sunday night…. connected here from the office at about 3 a.m. in Connecticut. There is a song that comes to mind called ‘Nobody does it better ‘ by Carly Simon…..this is you Cheryl !! I know you had lots of friends at WAVY-TV and all of us here logging into the WAVY web-site…of course family too!! Your wonderful personality and charm is a front runner in life, in everything that you do !! Wishing you all the very best in your new career !! ps-How ironic that the last ‘Pet of the week’ segment’s name is Nelson. Take care ! always! Dave Nelson

  18. Brandi Masson says:

  22. Venita Taylor says:

You will TRULY be missed!!! Although I never watched on the weekends, I loved when you would fill in during the week for the early morning broadcast. Your on-air demeanor has an air of sincerity and sweetness that automatically drew in fans. Plus, I could count on a response if I answered a brain bruiser! Best of luck to you – I know you’ll do well!!!

  23. Cheryl Nelson says:

Thank you all so much for your comments and kind words. It really means a lot to me. Best wishes! :)

    Cheryl:
Don’t know if you remember me, you friend from Smithfield with the Honda Civic….So sorry to hear you are leaving WAVY. I hope you are not leaving the area and I hope someone has the good sense to get you back on the air locally. I know it is hard to always get the accuracy right when forcasting, but delivery goes along way, and you have that down, second to none in this market. Take care and best wishes.

  27. Karen L says:

Oh no… and here I was thinking you would surely be snatched up by The Weahter Channel. You have been top-notch and I thank you for that.

  28. RICHARD W says:

  29. Big D says:

Noooooooooo! I’m boycotting Wavy on the weekends now. You were the only reason I tuned in. Hampton Roads is going to miss your bright personality and reliable forecasting. You are by far the best meteorologist this area has ever had. Good luck to you in your future endeavors.

  30. Jim Lawrence says:

Girl I really enjoy watching you on TV and I really enjoy your forcast. You will truely be missed and I doubt if they will find another person of your caliber to replace you. I wish you and your family the best in your endevors.

  31. Jean Pearce says:

Cheryl, Just heard on the radio this morning that you are leaving. I am so sorry, you are one of the best TV personalities ever. You have such stage presence and have had it since the beginning. You always looked very professional too. I hope you can keep your many fans informed, please don’t be a stranger. Sadly, Jean Pearce. However, best of luck to you in whatever you do.

  32. Gripps says:

Sorry to see you go. All the best. You were a great addition to the “Wavy/Fox” team. As for this household, the reason we have loved the weather team for all these years is because of the, so-called “Silliness” and lightheartedness. All the other stations weather people are so boring! At least this weather team appears to enjoy their job and make us chuckle/smile when we watch. Maybe you can get Jim Lawrence back, we loved him also, but it sure was nice of Cheryl to bring some added color to the broadcasts. She will be sorely missed. Please don’t say your going back to Syracuse!

  33. Bob Fort says:

Cheryl, you will be missed. It’s too bad WAVY couldn’t have kept you and persuaded Jon Cash to leave. You are twice as competent a meteorologist, and much more articulate. Good luck in whatever you do.

  34. CC says:

    Cheryl,

Dalton and I are so sad to hear you are leaving! Your Holiday Lights Contest was such an exciting part of many people’s lives. You made Christmas in Hampton Roads so much fun! Good luck we love ya!
    Carroll and Dalton

  35. Michael says:

Did NBC pin $20 to your collar and wish you the best of luck? First Conan…and now you! Seriously, good luck to you and your family in all future endeavors.

  36. Kent Saunders says:

The brightest ray of sunshine is gone!! Cheryl, you will truly be missed. Glad you will be spending more time with your family!! God speed!
