A real Nasty Noreaster

Today is the day! The highest winds and the worst tides will occur today as the remnants of Ida glides by just south of Hatteras. The low has gotten close enough to the southern part of the Outer Banks to allow the pressure gradient (difference in pressure) to relax greatly…so the wind hasn’t been bad at all down there. While Hatteras has been experiencing 25 mph with gusts…Duck to Corolla has been experiencing 50 mph gusts and they are close to 60 mph from Sandbridge to Cape Henry. It’s all about where the greatest pressure “gradient” is that leads to the highest winds…hence the biggest waves…and then the biggest problems with flooding, overwash, and coastal property damage.

Is little creek base in Virginia Beach going to closed today?
For those of us that brave living in Norfolk, near or in town we love it most of the time, but days like today are not the “cat’s meow”. Any word on road travel from the Larrymore Lawns or Little Creek area to Norfolk General? There are absolutely no cameras to view. Need to get in today to take care of all the sick folks. Thanks for your input.
The Lynnhaven River is the highest in years. I cannot find the marsh and the tent for the Wine classis is still up!!
What we needed was a clear and concise place to see the school closings. I had heard on the radio that MOST schools were closed, they named a few that were not, ours was not among those, and now I find that the school bus did in fact come for our boys!
Honestly guys, when there are conditions such as these, a School Closing List would be very helpful!

Please provide more coverage of the Peninsula weather, closing roads, flooded communities, especially for those who manage large numbers of people in public services.
Observation from Weatherbug station at Ocean Lakes High School: 4.12 inches of rain since midnight, highest wind gust from the Northeast 52 miles per hour.
This storm is huge! Why are newport news schools not closed yet?! It is going to get worse throughout the day. CNU students still have class. They have to walk around a mostly flooded campus to get to classes! This is rediculous. Please do something Wavy TV 10 !!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys; I really love you guys, but I wanted to watch the Today show. Why are you broadcasting on 10 and 43? People who want to continue watching you can switch to 43. You’re not giving people any choice.
I am on Thalia Creek [Wester Branch of the Lynnhaven] and the tide this am equaled Isabel. Please explain to your viewers tide variations, per NOAA predistions this PM it will be .2ft above this am tide already. Explain mean lower low tide. At what height do the flood gates go up on the Downtown, MMBT, HRBT and the CBT. Do all of them have flood gates…very inportant info. Ed

SOMEBODY – PLEASE tell John that, although 7.5 feet of tide level is FASCINATING, unless we know what the AVERAGE Tide is, IT MAKES NO SENSE TO MOST OF US!!!!!!!!
We need the average to understand the implications/context of the tide being at that height….. Remember – numbers without context = “blah, blah, blah”…

Can somebody tell us WHY NEWPORT NEWS PUBLIC SCHOOLS are the ONLY public school system STILL HAVING NORMAL HOURS!!!! They are more concerned about the possibility of losing a SNOW DAY!!!!! PLEASE!!!! I GUESS the CHILDREN are not a concerning!!!!

If I go ahead and start the ark where do I find 2 of your species? Just paying you back,lol. My wife and I were living in Gates, co. and you came to our church. We stopped on the way out to get your book and say hello. I just stopped and said a couple words and you looked at my wife and said ” I know you have your hands full with this guy, lol. Just happened to think about that this morning. Good job, stay dry.

We’ve had 7.65″ of rain since Tuesday evening.
I just want it to be known that Hampton University is the only school in the city that has a 2 hour delay. Even though the worst part is yet to come. I live on campus and it is FLOODING!!! Trees are down, cars are trapped, and students are getting soaked. I don’t understand who is in charge and what type of decisions are being made. Time Kaine declared a state of emergency but HU seems to have a pride problem and NO concern for their students! Very frustrated and concerned.

I live in Kempsville and my weather station has had a guest of 55mph. There is a creek next to my house that has only flooded over during Isabel in 8 years but it is close to flooding over and many resedential streets are flooded. Thanks for keeping us updated for 5 hours straight!
What does a level 3 wind advisory mean?
Jon, I live in James City in Chickahomony Haven and the water is not going down. I live on the canal, it is up over my pier, up in my yard and the boat lift only has about 4 foot visable right now The school buses drove through @ a foot of water to get our kids this morning. I just talked to the Warhill HS office and they referred me to the transportation dept. who told me that South Riverside is now closed and the buses will not be bringing our kids home. What is wrong with Williamsburg/ James City Schools??? Even the transportation dept. admitted to me that Williamsburg/ James City made the wrong decision by NOT closing schools today….Why????
Got my answer…it is distance abouve mean low tide.

Hey sara here from windmill point in white stone va, we are flooding here, water is coming over the dunes! most peirs are under water. The creeks are flooding over the roads, wind is very fierce!!
why does our newport news public school are always the last to know of school closing? when it comes to weather like this.
