November Nor’easter Update
This evening’s high tide ran slightly above predicted which makes me think that tides could top 8 feet by Thursday afternoon/evening’s high tide. During the height of Isabel, the tide was 7.9 feet. The highest tides for Hampton Roads and northeast North Carolina will be between 4pm-7pm Thursday and 4am-7am Friday. If you live in a low-lying or flood prone area, please move your vehicle to higher ground and do not attempt to drive through water of unknown depth. If your area flooded during Isabel, chances are it will flood again. Hopefully you already have a “hurricane kit” in place so you don’t have to run out to the store to get supplies at the last minute. As of this writing, there are already 8000+ homes without power in Hampton Roads/NE North Carolina due to downed trees. Winds offshore are already gusting to 56 mph at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and could gust close to or even over 60 mph Thursday and Thursday night. As more rain continues to fall, the saturated ground will likely lead to more downed trees and power outages.
If you don’t have to travel over the next couple of days, it may be better just to stay home.
Stay safe.

For the first time in as long as I can remember, WAVY TV 10 has not over dramatisized the weather. Normally we can expect Don Slater to interrupt programming to show where the rain is by neighborhood to neighborhood, when in fact it is not necesaary. Driving people to a panic is not responsible weather reporting, and finally you have started to be responsible in your reporting of the weather. I have lived many places, someplaces with much more severe weather than we get here, and this is the only place I;ve lived where the weatherman tries to drive people into a panic with constant weather warnings over something people have lived through for centuries. None of this is anything new, I think it’s just an opportunity to show off WAVY TV 10’s fancy radar mapping.
i need to know if any Virgina beach schools are closed for tomorrow any of the Bayside schools
It is now high tide at my house here in York Co. The tide did come across the street but it is nowhere even close to Isabelle We have moved all the cars and I guess we will wait for this evenings high tide I did try and take a few pics but they are not turning out because of all the spot lights on the street. Everyone is up and watching the wave action.
How about comparing this storm to TS Ernesto. Just went through high tide this morning and no where near Isabel. Was not even close to Ernesto. I live in the Guiena area of Gloucester. Are your comparisons based on Southside?
I’m wondering why Isle of Wight County did not close schools. My kids are having a fit. I see that IOW Academy is closed. What’s up? The wind and rain are just as serious here as every where else. Does this mean there are no flooded areas, downed trees, anywhere in IOWC? Come on!
We live in the Fox Hill area of Hampton. The water line in our garage is still there from Isabel. The water at 5:00 am was 18″ less than Isabel . Just wait 12 hours till the next tide Gloucester and York Co. you’ll get the Isabel effect.
LMS is closed today and maybe tomorrow.
East Oceanview was at Isabel’s flood height @ 4:30am today. Now it is 3 hours later and water has only dropped about 8″ Street is under about 4 feet of water as I write this.
Worried about tonight as it looks to be worse. Floating debis is everywhere.
For anyone one that doesn’t know the website for school closings in the Norfolk Public School system, this is it.

IT IS A DAMN SHAME THAT THE SUPTR OF NEWPORT NEWS SCHOOL SYSTEM WOULD REQUIRE MY CHILD TO GO TO SCHOOL IN SUCH SEVERE WEATHER. THEN WHEN MY CHILD IS SICK FROM SUCH NASTY WEATHER YOU GUYS REQUIRE US TO PICK THEM UP IMMEDIATELY. I GUESS I HAVE TO WRITE OBAMA TO GET A REASONABLE RESPONSE!!!!!!!!!!!
I just want it to be known that Hampton University is the only school in the city that has a 2 hour delay. Even though the worst part is yet to come. I live on campus and it is FLOODING!!! Trees are down, cars are trapped, and students are getting soaked. I don’t understand who is in charge and what type of decisions are being made. Time Kaine declared a state of emergency but HU seems to have a pride problem and NO concern for their students! Very frustrated and concerned.

MORNING CHERYL,
I DRIVE TO NORFOLK FROM GLOUCESTER EVERY MORNING TO WORK, HAVE YOU HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT THE COLEMAN BRIDGE BEING SHUT DOWN DUE TO HIGH WINDS?
WILL THERE BE AN UPDATE AT 6 PM ABOUT SCHOOL CLOSING AND DELAYS?
ive been watchin the news all morning there’s been no mention of the flooding going on in tidewater gardens apts. water is up to some doors residents are lterally trapped cars are floating@i haven’t heard a siren all morning.
When will we know about closings tommorrow? Especially in the Virginia Beach area. I am assuming though that they will be closed though because it is getting worse, i stll would like to know though.
Again why does the Postal Service have their men and women out in this
storm and most streets being flooded. They will loose more in flooded
out trucks and sick mail carriers and putting their life in jeopardy.
Some time I wonder what has happened to common sense in our system.
If you folks can get a message to the Postal Service that would be the
humane thing to do. I live off of Bow Creek and my daughter tried to get
to my house and she saw mail trucks trying to go through the flooded
street. How inconsiderate can the postal service be????? Thank You.
I live in Hampton two blocks off of Mercury Blvd. We have received 8.7in of rain since yesterday according to my husbands rain gauge. I have heard that Bethel High School here in Hampton is opening around 1:00 p.m. Could you check that out? I have been listening to you guys all morning since 6:00 a.m. and you are doing a GREAT Job!!! Thanks very mucyh
I AM TRYING TO LEAVE NORFOLK GENERAL GOING TO THE GEORGETOWN SECTION OF CHEASAPEAKE. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN GET HOME?
I just left my house (near Armstead and Mercury in Hampton)less than an hour ago and the only thing flooded was my ditch and a few low spots in my yard. Next thing I know, I’m getting an auto-message from Dominion stating they have cut the power off in my neighborhood. What is up with that?
Does anyone know any information in regards to the Denbigh area of Newport News, I am at work and not looking for to the commute or to get home and can’t get to my apartment complex.
Thanks
Total rainfall at Ocean Lakes HS 14.19 inches over the last 24 hours
hey wavy news 10 are norfolk public schools closed tomorrow?
thankxz- Keara
I’d like to know why I had to wait until 4 a.m. Thurs. monring to find out Virginia beach Schools were closed, when it was obvious the weather was bad enough, and the forcast was clear that it was going to stay that way. It seems everyone but the superintendant understood school should be closed. It is now almost 6 p.m. on Thurs. evening and it seems to me the kids have no business going to school tommorrow. The forcast IS calling for things to start to calm down tommorrow morning but why make parents wait and wonder, Just make the decision to close on Fri. and then we KNOW and can plan accordingly. Ridiculus.
Don…. as a meteorology teacher, does it seem reasonable to you that the call to close Virginia Beach Schools could be made now instead of 4 or 5 am?
I just don’t get it.
Sorry…..the call was just made. Virginia beach public schools closed tommorrow……thank you for not making me wait ubtil 4 am, I sincerely appreciate it.
im 13 years old and i go to elizabeth city north carolina i need to kno if elizabeth caity pasquatank public schoools are closed friday
Keenan…… google the name of your school honey. there should be info on the web site…..or google the name of the school district. Example: Elizabeth City public Schools……if their web site does have the info, they have not decided yet.
I’ve put my children’s mattresses in the living room with me since the rooms in the back of the house are close to all the trees in the back yard. I am seriously wondering what I am going to do if something were to happen…my street is not flooded, but the streets on either side are, so I do not have a way out. I am hoping that this dies down really soon before any serious damage occurs!
I am interested in the South Nagts Head area. I have an older cottage at about the 17 mile post and most of the severe storm damage since the sixties has been down around the 20 mile post or further down The ocean has come across this area several times. Ash Wednesday was the worst before this. The only water during the Ash Wed. storm was from the sound during the high tide that came over. It caused for anything that was not nailed down to float across the highway toward the dunes across the street.
