Here’s a great photo that was sent in by Lona Wilson from the Kempsville area.  We had some very heavy rain yesterday across the region.  It was a very interesting day.  In the morning temperatures heated up very quickly.  We were in the upper 80s by the late morning here at the station.  Personally, I think there was a land breeze from the night before that created some micro-scale subsidence (sinking) which aided in heating things up.  The rapid heating created a Super sea breeze that moved inland.  Usually sea breezes will kick up some showers and storms, but yesterday it worked with some high instability and moisture to produce widespread downpours.  Here’s a photo from Stephanie Cooke who is a wonderful emplyee of WAVY-TV/FOX 43.

It showed some of the localized flooding that occurred around Military Highway in Chesapeake.  This was a common site across the area.  Norfolk International picked up 0.55″ of rain.  One person in Virginia Beach called and said they got over 3″ of rain.  We are over 2 and a half inches of rain above average for the month, but somehow we are still down 0.48″ for the year.  Don in Toano said that he actually missed the rain over the last couple of days.  Greg in Currituck said that he got 1.3″ of rain yesterday.  He also says that corn is looking good across his area.  Donna in Blackwater also says that corn is looking good as she has spoken with some local farmers.

Today high pressure is building in a little stronger.  Winds will be northerly at about 8-12mph.  So we should dry out a little today.  A slight chance for a shower with a little higher chance for Northeast North Carolina.  We should be cool over the next couple of days.  Highs will be in the upper 70s/lower 80s.   The average high is 82 degrees.
