Storms Before The Calm

While I admit I have slight dyslexia I meant that title line.  A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 10:00pm for the area.  You may rember a couple of weeks ago when I said we had the most unstable atmosphere that I had seen since I’ve been here. Then the storms waffed out before they got to the southsdie.  Well today is another really unstable day.  The CAPE (instability) is 3500 again.  (1500 is pretty unstable).  The lifted index (LI) is -8 over Chesapeake….That’s bad.  A cold front is moving in from the West. Last time though we had more zonal flow upstairs.  Today there’s a bit more of a trough overhead.  Plus, the humidity is a little higher than last time.  Storms have already fired up west of I-95.  So we’ll see some storms through here during the evening hours.  Coverage will be about 70% unless the Norfolk bubble magically appears again.  Any storm can drop about an inch or more of rain.  We’re that saucy outside, and you can feel it.  The good news is that this weekend will be great.  Lots of sun and highs in the 80s.  Plus it will be dry and quiet.  Hence the Blog title.

Also, I had a person ask about tropical information.  We have a new tropical page with a lot of great tools on this site.  If you click on weather then on the banner “Hurricane Ready 2009″, then you can access it.  We’ll have a tab up for it soon.  You can also follow this link for now: http://www.wavy.com/subindex/weather/hurricane

It has the storm surge maps for the area, evacuation routes, and a great interactive storm tracker.  You can also print out the hurricane tracking chart very soon.  I think it will be one of the best sites to track the tropics in the region.  Enjoy.  Now I have to go track some non-tropical storms.  Sayonara.

Looks like the Norfolk bubble is firmly in place. I don’t expect much to develop this evening…
