Cold January, But No Big Snow In A Long Time
Yes, it has been colder than usual. So far for January, temperatures have averaged 3 degrees below normal for the month. It’s not some kind of big indicator of any Global Cooling, Warming, or anything else (those kinds of statistics are tabulated for decades). If you’ll remember back to December, it was unusually warm…4 degrees above normal.
Regardless of the last snowstorm that wasn’t…we haven’t had significant snow in quite a long time. The last snowfall greater than 4″ for Norfolk was the day after Christmas, 2004; We had 5″ of snow on that December 26th. That’s not any kind of record, but it’s been a while!
It has been a record 12 consecutive winter seasons with less than 10″ of snow. If we don’t see a couple of significant snowstorms in the next 45 days, this could easily be the 13th straight winter without 10″ of snow. The snow threat usually diminishes considerably in early March.
