Active Weather Day
A strong line of showers moved through the area this morning. There weren’t a lot of thunderstorms, but there were some gusty winds. Winds gusted to 58 mph around Fort Eustis at about 10am. Our instruments recorded a gust to 60mph at the Currituck Emergency Management office in Currituck. There were unconfirmed reports of a waterspout at the Menchville Marina in Newport News. Chopper 10 showed the damage, and it does appear like a waterspout/weak tornado touched down there. It looks like a boat house was knocked down. With a little roof damage to an adjacent boat house. The National Weather Service will give their official report at a later time. Chopper 10 also saw some minor damage to one of the rides at Busch Gardens. It looked like the log flume ride, but I can’t cofirm it. There was a little debris on the ride and some damage to the rail. We had a few reports of trees down. We reported on one around the Denbigh Plantation area this afternoon. I’ll try to give an update this afternoon with some photos.
The setup was not impressive. We did have warm temperatures and high humidity, but the instability was not that high. There were not a lot of lightning strikes. It was basically a line of showers with gusty winds along/ahead of it. I didn’t get a chance to see how low the ceilings were nor the low level instability. That may have been more impressive. We did have a stationary front through the area. Temps were in the 70s in North Carolina with upper 40s on the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck. We can expect scattered showers through the afternoon. Temperatures will cool down where they haven’t already.
