Freezing Fog And Black Ice
Freezing Fog and Black Ice…Sounds like a pair of mixed drinks. (Disclaimer…I’m not aware of anything called those in the Bar industry). But we did have some of both this morning in the viewing area. Freezing fog is as it sounds. Fog that freezes on the ground. The tiny liquid droplets freeze on contact with a frozen surface. We had it here in the metro a couple of years ago, but this year it was mostly in rural areas. It was reported in Emporia and Rocky Mount. It is such a rare event that I had to look up the weather symbol. It is basically three horizontal bars with a V in the middle of it. Regular fog is just two parrallel bars. See photos.
Along with that we had some black ice. This is not ice that is black, but rather it is ice that forms on the blacktop. Ice is typically clear so it looks black. It’s very hard to spot though. We had some accidents reported in Suffolk, and a viewer sent in an email about 2 accidents between Moyock and Barco, North Carolina. Doris Galen (weather watcher) on the Eastern Shore reported black ice as well as Don Aspinall in Toano. The ice quickly melted though as the sun was out in full force. We will heat up to the upper 40s to lower 50s today. The northeast winds will keep the temps down a little. We may see some wintry weather on Thursday. Right now I’m just calling for Flurries. Stay tuned!
