Snow in November

November 21st, 2008 at 11:54 am by Jeremy Wheeler under Weather

A while back… I said that we had a decent chance for getting snow early this year.  It was on one of the blogs somewhere.  Well, it snowed pretty good today, and it’s only November.  We just had reports come in of 1-2″ of snow across parts of Northeast North Carolina.  I’ve attached some photos that people sent in.

We didn’t set a record. The earliest snow in a season was on November 3rd, 1951 where Norfolk recorded a trace of snow.  A lot of the snow that fell this morning melted in the metro.  But outside of the metro we had it really stick to the grassy surfaces.  Most of the roads were ok.  Maybe a few slick secondaries.  Very pretty to look at.  Our cameras captured some great video.  Chopper 10 was up for a few minutes, but had to come down due to poor visibility.  Unfortunately/fortunately the snow should all melt by the afternoon. Drying winds should come in this afternoon and dry out the roads.  So I’m not too concerned about icing.  There will probably be a few slick spots though.   Especially where the snow melts and puddles.

  1. [...] 3rd  A lot of people remember the bad forecasts, but they quickly forget the good ones.  Meteorologically we forecast Tropical Storm Hanna very well.  Although I think some people misunderstood our message.  I said on air the day before the Suffolk tornado that we had a high chance for severe weather.   Plus, the snow that we had in November… I correctly forecast that it would mostly melt except for some grassy areas.  Maybe an inch in a few cities.  http://blogs.wavy.com/2008/11/21/snow-in-november/  [...]

  2. [...] Finally, (just for fun) remember last year that we had snow in November.  Here’s the blog from last November about the event: http://blogs.wavy.com/2008/11/21/snow-in-november/  [...]
